The best part of my day? Eating a caramel filled bar Godiva chocolate bar of course! Only kidding, although I did enjoy that chocolate. Today was quite a busy day. Late to bed last night and early to rise this morning. However tired I may have been, I had a great time during the C-Span shows. I was disappointed that I was not chosen to share my answer to some of Brian Lamb’s questions, but what can you do. With almost 150 of us eager to answer, not everyone is going to be picked. I was so proud when Josh explained the PPACA (while answering my question) because I already knew everything he was talking about. I knew then that I had done great research for my comp argumentation paper this year. At the Smithsonian, I was a bit disappointed. That could have been because I was not interested in the space and flight exhibits. Unfortunately, when I tried to walk to the history museum I got caught in the downpour. I ran for all I was worth (yes in my dress and flats) back to the space museum. Oh well. I was very interested in both post-dinner discussions but i was especially grateful for all the advice Dean Flagel gave us. I took careful notes and laughed too! I absolutely loved his speech. I walked out of the cinema feeling more confident and ready to face the application process!

Day 3

Wow, things went by so quickly yesterday that I didn’t even get a chance to write my daily blog post! The Memorial tour ran late, and I didn’t even get to bed until 12! Waking up this morning at 5:30 was not fun. Needless to say, I set my alarm for 5 mins later and went back to sleep! But back to yesterday’s events. I thought the Livestrong challenge video that the PR panel showed us was very powerful. It made me think of my Pop-Pop who passed away from lung cancer this year. However sad it may have been, it was effective (got the message across) I liked that. The best parts of the day were by far Hoda’s speech and the Young Professionals Panel. I really enjoyed Hoda’s book, so it was great to hear her tell some of the stories that were in it. She was funny and nice AND she signed my book!! I admired her speech-giving style. She used gestures, she was relaxed and well spoken, she was honest with us and she had some great advice. I recorded most of the speech on my video camera. After dinner we had the pleasure of listening to the panel. They were all so cool! I’ve noticed that the journalists we’ve met have stressed the importance of learning all the types of journalism. Ms. Reese, Chris, and the panelists all said that, so I’ve taken that advice to heart. After all, they know best! I loved Angie, Kevin, Lynn and BJ’s tips for standing out at an internship, their tips for creating contacts and establishing a public profile, I loved it all! I’m also jealous that Kevin got to see the HP movie! I’ll have to see it sometime when I’m home. Last but not least, I was excited to see the Lincoln memorial and Washington monument. I got plenty of pictures. On my way to C-Span to be in the live audience! Look for me!

Newseum & Other Activities

I could not have had more fun today! The Newseum was all I expected and more! I especially loved the interactive studio. My first attempt at creating a reporter video was a bit awkward because my group mates and I were passing the mic- and trying to divide up the lines- amongst ourselves. On my second try I chose the blizzard background and I was so pleased with the results. Attention family and friends: be prepared to watch me report live from the Newseum when I return home. I also enjoyed my concurrent sessions with Mr. Finn and Ms. Reese. I took public speaking class during my junior year, so I was ready to learn all I could from Mr. Finn. His advice was so helpful, I will be holding onto the handout for future reference! Even though I would not like to work in television production, I was very interested to hear all about it. Also, I was able to speak with Ms. Reese about her experience as an award-winning writer! I learned that broadcast journalism or a regular journalism program could be a better fit for me than print journalism as a specific major. In addition, she attended American University and I am hoping to tour there after I leave the conference. I am so impressed by all she has accomplished. I can only hope I will be that successful with my writing one day. The conference has been such a great experience for me thus far. I know that journalism is what I want to pursue, I just need to set my mind to it and make it happen! I look forward to hearing from Hoda at the National Press Club tomorrow. I hope she has time to sign my book!

The First Day

I must say, I had an amazing time today. I really enjoyed Chris’ speech. Before today I had my heart set on studying print journalism. However, Chris’ advice to “try as many types of journalism as possible” made me reconsider that. Why shouldn’t I look into broadcast journalism as well? It could be fun. After all, hoda’s book provided some insight as to just how interesting it can be! I am very excited to visit the Newseum. I will be one of two speakers addressing the yellow group about the interactive studio. From what my fellow correspondents have told me, it seems like one of the best features of the museum. We’ll see if I still think that is true tomorrow night!

Wow, I am still having trouble using this website. All I know how to do is publish a post and view it!

I am currently reading Daughter of the Queen of Sheba and enjoying it. What a sad yet beautifully written memoir.

I can’t wait for the conference, just about a week away!

My First Post

Hi everyone! This is my very first post on the blog, so I hope it works!

I am very excited for the journalism conference. I recently bought two books from the “recommended reading” list: Hoda Kotb’s and Jacki Lyden’s books. I am looking forward to reading these novels and eventually meeting the authors.
